Build Your Action Sports Company Hit-List (The Smart Way to Job Hunt)

Most people job hunt backwards. They wait for a posting, they apply, they hope. Then they do it again. It feels like doing something, but it puts your whole career in the hands of whoever happens to be hiring this week. There is a better way, and the best people in the industry have used it for years. It is called a company hit-list.

A hit-list is simple. It is your personal short list of the companies you actually want to work for, whether or not they are hiring right now. You build it once, you keep it warm, and you stop chasing scraps. Here is how to do it.

Step one: pick the companies, not the jobs

Start with the brands that make you care. Not the ones with an opening today, the ones you would be proud to represent. Open the companies directory and just go exploring. Maybe it is technical outerwear, so you are looking at Arc'teryx and Stio. Maybe it is the outdoor lifestyle world, so Patagonia, Cotopaxi, and KEEN jump out. Maybe you are chasing the fitness and movement crossover, and Vuori is the one. Snowboard your thing? Put Nidecker Group on the list.

Aim for ten to fifteen companies. Enough to give you options, few enough that you can actually pay attention to all of them.

Step two: study the machine

This is the part that separates you from every other applicant. Do not just look at the logo. Look at how the company is built. Who runs the region? Who leads sales, marketing, e-commerce? On Malakye you can see the real people inside these brands, and that is gold. Notice too that a single company is often a whole family of labels. K2 Sports is home to ten brands, which means ten times the doors once you understand how the group is put together.

Look at a career like Jen McVey, who worked her way up to Director, Americas at Nidecker over years inside the company. Studying a path like that tells you two things. It tells you what the ladder actually looks like, and it tells you who the decision makers are. When you understand the machine, you stop sounding like an outsider and start sounding like someone who already belongs. We broke down exactly how this looks inside one brand in our piece on snowboard industry jobs at Nidecker North America.

Step three: get on the radar before the opening

The whole advantage of a hit-list is timing. When a job finally posts, you do not want to be a stranger showing up cold. You want to be the person the team already recognizes. Follow your target companies, engage with what they put out, and make sure your own profile tells the real story of who you are and what you love about this industry. Show up where the industry actually gathers too, at trade shows like Outdoor Retailer, because in-person networking still moves the needle in these casual industries.

Then, when something opens on the jobs board, you are not applicant number two hundred. You are the person who has been paying attention, who understands the brand, and who the hiring manager has maybe already seen around. And when it is time to apply, you already know how to get past the ATS so a real person actually sees your name.

Why this works

Action sports is a small world. People hire people they know, or people who clearly get it. A hit-list turns a random, exhausting job search into a focused campaign on a handful of places you genuinely want to be. That is the whole reason Malakye exists. We have connected the industry with its people since 2002, so you can find the companies, see the humans inside them, and put yourself in the room before the job is even posted. Build your list. Keep it warm. Go get the one you want.
